Add Your Links Here

mtbadge-small.gifUpdated August 28, 2005

Sometimes the most frustrating things for beginners in Movable Type turn out to be simple and painfully obvious, once you have figured them out. Adding links to to your first weblog or adding a link to an entry can be one of those things if you are not used to html.

Adding a link to an entry.

To add a hyperlink to an entry you need to write out the entire hyperlink tag. For example, if you want to add a link to Learning Movable Type to your entry, you need to type in the Entry Body the following text:

<a href="/">Learning Movable Type</a>

So if you type:

into your Entry Body, the entry will read:

Opening Links in a New Window

If you would like your links to open in to a new browser window, you need to add the target="_blank" to your link code like so:

<a href="http://learningmovabletype.com/" target="_blank">

Now the link Learning Movable Type will open in a new browser window.

Adding a Link section to your MT3.2 blog

In the default Main Index template of MT3.2, find the div id="beta" section. In the default template, you will see the various sidebar sections divided by a blank line. First there is Search, then Category, then Monthly. Add a links section with the following code:

<div class="module">
<h2 class="module-header">Links</h2>
<div class="module-content">
Add your links here
</div>
</div>

Replace Add your links here with the links you wish to add, separated by a break tag <br />

Like so:

<div class="module">
<h2 class="module-header">Links</h2>
<div class="module-content">
<a href="http://www.elise.com">Elise.com</a><br />
<a href="http://www.elise.com/recipes">Simply Recipes</a><br />
</div>
</div>

Save and rebuild your template.

Adding a link to "Add Your Links Here" for MT3.1.

The default MT 3.1 and earlier templates contain something like the following,

add_your_links_here.gif

a place to add hyperlinks to other sites. To add a link you need to do the following:

  1. Open your Main Index template and scroll down to

    for MT 3.1:

    <h2> Links </h2>

    <ul><li>
    <a href="">Add Your Links Here</a><br />
    </li></ul>

    for MT 2.661 and earlier versions:

    <div class="sidetitle"> Links </div>

    <div class="side">
    <a href="">Add Your Links Here</a><br />
    </div>

  2. In between the quotation marks after <a href= add a URL for a site you want to link to. Replace "Add Your Links Here" with the name of the site. Example:

    for MT 3.1:

    <h2> Links </h2>

    <ul><li>
    <a href="http://www.elise.com">www.elise.com</a><br />
    </li></ul>

    for MT 2.661 and earlier versions:

    <div class="sidetitle">
    Links
    </div>

    <div class="side">
    <a href="http://www.elise.com">www.elise.com</a><br />
    </div>

  3. Add as many links as you want, making sure to end each line with a line-break tag:

    <br />

  4. Save and rebuild your index template.
